The Catholic Defender: A small group of Obnoxious Protestants

Editors Note: (George Lujack has been seen at McDonald's, be ware) Now back to the regular programing. Last year while Dr. Gregory Thompson and I were meeting Senators at the Jefferson City Capital Building, I happened to run into the chief attorney representing the ACLU.

I informed him that we would be butting heads if I had the time to hang around. I told him that in America, we have the right to practice our faith in public.

Considering what the ACLU did to fight Dr. Gregory Thompson and many others across America, I was not to sympathetic to his cause.

I would find out from one of the Senators that this guy also represented the Westboro Baptist group that protest at the funerals of Soldiers killed in action and little girls who are shot by murderers.

I did not know that when I spoke with him and he escaped me after that. There are right ways to take a stand for God and there are wrong ways. The following is an example of a wrong way: When you see this video, it is interesting that the Protestants were the ones who were filming the scene they were creating making themselves look bad.

Editors note, these obnoxious Protestants were disrupting an out door Mass as people were trying to listen. Can you imagine what it would sound like if Catholics were to barge in to disrupt Protestant services? These people do not know Christ nor do they no how to be Christ-like.

These people attacking the Catholics at Mass are in truth voice pieces of the evil one spouting out lies and misinformation about the Church. They make charges but cannot back anything up. Notice they do not even try. Their purpose here was not to show Christian love by example, but to bring hate and sow anger.


Sometimes the most anti-Catholic people out there are fallen away Catholics. Pray for them, like Saul's attack on Jesus Christ in the earliest years of the Church, these people are doing the same thing today.

I want to point out that most Protestants love the Lord and would never think of such action. What these people were doing was taking pot shots at Catholics, at the Pope and Jesus Mother. They were trying to get a rise from Catholics. I thought that over all the Catholics held themselves in check very well.

When people like this come to disrupt for the purpose of picking a fight, it only makes me wish I could have been there. By comparison, I recommend the following:

The Catholic Defender: Road To Emmaus

On that first Easter morning, two men were walking to a village debating the happenings of the past weekend.

Jesus came upon them and walked with them yet they did not recognize him. Jesus let on as if he was not aware of what took place.

Cleopas asked the Lord,"Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know of the things that have taken place there in these days".

Jesus asked them "what sort of things"?

They responded, "The things that happened to Jesus the Nazarene, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, how our chief priests and rulers both handed him over to a sentence of death and crucified him".

As they walked on, the two continued to recount to Jesus what had happened to include the report that his body was not there at the tomb. Angels were seen in a vision and the Lord was seen by Mary.

Jesus began to open their eyes about the Messiah when they urged Jesus stay with them and so he did. The two never did recognize Jesus until finally, when Jesus "took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them. With that their eyes were opened and he vanished from their sight. Then they said to each other, Were not our hearts burning within us while he spoke to us on the way and opened the scriptures to us" (Luke 24:32)?

Jesus opened their eyes to the truth and brought the truth of the scripture to light.

Acts 8:26 we see "the angel of the Lord" speaking to St. Philip informing him to go towards Gaza from Jerusalem through a desert route.

St. Philip encounters an Ethiopian eunuch who was a high court official of the Queen of Ethiopia. The Ethiopian was reading from Isaiah and could not fully understand what all this meant.

St. Philip, led by the Spirit, ran up and heard him reading Isaiah. Philip asked him if he understood the passage he was reading. He replied, "How can I, unless someone instructs me"?

The Ethiopian invited St. Philip to ride along with him who explained this scripture: "Like a sheep he was led to the slaughter, and as a lamb before it's shearer is silent, so he opened not his mouth. In his humiliation justice was denied him. Who will tell of his posterity? For his life is taken from the earth".

St. Philip was able to open the eyes of the Ethiopian Eunuch who requested baptism.

As quickly as Jesus had vanished from the two Disciples sight, "The Spirit of the Lord snatched Philip away, and the eunuch saw him no more but continued on his way rejoicing". Meanwhile, Philip was next seen at Azotus and continued to proclaim "the good news to all the towns until he reached Caesarea".

When I read about St. Philip, and this passage where the Spirit of the Lord took him to Azotus, which was about 88 miles from there. I can't help but think about some of the extraordinary gifts God used through Padre Pio in our own time.

It's important that St. Luke, a Gentile, recognize the importance of the Holy Spirit using men to open the eyes of people to follow the Lord. Through the Lord's Church we have been given the "Deposit of Faith" to teach the nations.

We become His voice when we proclaim God's word and teach the hidden messages found in the scriptures. We become His feet when we go where he sends us to do His will. We become His hands when we serve those in need.

By virtue of our Baptism and Confirmation, we are called to open the eyes of those searching for the truth. We are obligated to follow after the Lord so that He becomes center stage in our lives. He must increase while I decrease.

The New Testament is filled with examples of conversion that should give us example to do the same. We have great opportunity through the internet and media outlets we have available today.

Even so, there is a lot of confusion out in the real world just as there was on that first Easter morning. As the Lord reached out to Cleopus and his friend on the road to Emmaus, and as St. Philip reached out to the Ethiopian Eunuch in the desert, we need to be willing to do the same.

This coming Easter Vigil, there will be many received into the Catholic Church through the RCIA from all over the world. Today, there are many Ethiopian Eunuch's asking the question: "How can I, unless someone instructs me"?

The Catholic Defender: The Caller

Today began as most ordinary days that when I have the chance to take off from work.

I sleep in a little longer because I stayed up late the night before either working on Deepertruth, or watching a good movie.

The phone rang and I answered it wondering who might be calling me this early on a Saturday morning.

I answered the phone:

Hello, how may I help you?
The response: Is Mrs. Hartley available?

I responded that she was not present. She is not home at this time.
I was asked, are you the husband of Mrs. Hartley?

I responded "Yes", most certainly, how may I help you.
The Caller asked me for my Wife's last four of her Social Security Number. I was able to give it.

With all the traveling that my Wife was doing trying to work as a traveling Nurse, we were late for a payment. In talking with the Caller, I was quickly able to make the appropriate response taking care of the problem.

Because the Caller was so helpful and courteous, I came right out with it: "Your Catholic are you not"?
The Caller paused for a second and admitted, "Yes" he was.

I asked him why he had not been practicing his faith as he should?
His response was that he tried to get to Mass as often as he could.

I asked him when he last went to confession?
He admitted that he had not gone to confession since he was a sophomore in high school, he was now 31 years old.

I told him that in the past couple of weeks I met a woman who had made her first confession in 55 years. She was a survivor of the Nazi occupation of Poland and escaped to the United States through the efforts of Pope John Paul II who at the time was studying to become a priest. Through the years, in American Culture, she had lost her Catholic identity only to finally re-discover it.

I then told the Caller the importance of going to confession and getting his life totally in line with Christ's Church. I told him the scripture, James 5:19-20: "My brothers, if anyone among you should stray from the truth and someone bring him back, he should know that whoever brings back a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins."

The Caller became very interested in what I was telling him and asked for our information. I went back to the Apostles, their successors right down to today.

I told him that I was known as the "Catholic Defender" and he could find me simply by Google. That he could find www.deepertruthblog and listen to our radio programs and read our articles.

The Caller became very interested and promised to me that he would follow through and re-discover the roots of his faith. We must of talked on the phone for more than 20 minutes as we talked about the Catholic Faith. I also encouraged him to ask about Cursillo in his Parish and Diocese. That would be a great shot in the arm!

The Caller reminds me that you may not always know when the Lord might send someone to you to help them in their footsteps. The Lord's mission could come to you through a million different ways, just like this morning's Caller! How easy it could have been to either let it ring or even hang the phone up.

HEB opened a new mega-store in Copperas Cove that just opened up this weekend. There were thousands of people and so I went there to get some odds and ins getting ready for the Superbowl Sunday. Even Deepertruth needs to be ready for the Superbowl! While looking through the cheese and meats section, a staffer was planted near by so I struck up a conversation with her. She was from another area HEB who was helping out with this opening weekend. She was a strong believer in the "Non-denomination" groups, but by the time I left the scene, she had a much better understanding of the Catholic Faith! How wonderful it is to give witness for the Faith of the Apostles.

There is much hunger out there and the Lord is calling us to be His hands, His feet, and His voice. At the end of the day, it has been a good Deepertruth day as hopefully, the seeds of faith were sown and the Lord most glorified.

Jesus said, "For this I was born and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice" (John 18:37). "Jesus also said , "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me" (John 14:8).

Jesus speaks through His Church. St Paul wrote, "But if I should be delayed, you should know how to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of truth" (1 Timothy 3:15). May the Lord bless us this Easter Vigil with many conversions and reversions! Amen!

*BEST OF DTB #251* 3 Tips for Keeping those January Resolutions

Note from the Christie: You'll probably notice that this isn't strictly apologetics but more of a tactical application post. Life is hard and Christian life is cross-schlepping hard. How we live speaks more clearly about our beliefs than anything coming out of our mouths or keyboards. Let's help each other get it right, pick each other up when we get it wrong; witness first in the home, then in the world.

"Let all things be done decently and in order" (I Cor.14:40)

God is a God of order. Like cold is what happens when heat is absent, chaos is what happens when God is absent. Without the hand of God, or your hand as His child, all things will revert to their original state: nothingness. The process isn't pretty. The first few stages are mere messiness and disorder. Left alone, these degenerate into chaos. Chaos ultimately ends in obliteration and annihilation.

A wife and mom is in a constant fight with the descent into chaos.

It's the oldest story out there. Creation was orderly and functioned well until we introduced the chaos of sin. After that all Hell broke loose, literally. To make a near eternal story short, if you are battling the Home Depot web page or a counter top that continually fills up with junk mail, half finished scribblings, hair ties, dog collars, dirty coffee mugs, broken crayons, unsharpened pencils, random lists and rubber bands, you can blame Adam and Eve for it.

Though, from the looks of my counter top (and no, I will not be showing you a picture of my desk), I'd be the last person to ask about organization, I do have an insight or two into the process. I know how to get organization schemes wrong, I know how to fail, and since that's about it, let me help you avoid some of the pitfalls as you enter into January's Resolution Season.

#1 Let God In
Since God created order and you need Him for that, begin any home improvement project with prayer. Don't try to go at the house on your own steam. Don't even try to go at it with some expert's scheme. None of that is going to work as well as simply starting from the premise that you can't tackle this problem alone. Face it, the Universe is spinning out of control, your counter tops and dusty baseboards are merely evidence of a problem greater than mankind. Entropy is a law you are trying to break! Which leads me to my next point.

#2 You Are Doomed

You are going to fail. You may quit reading now or you may build into your system this humbling realization. Like we continually fall into sin and laziness in our spiritual life and need to be continually repentant and prayerful to battle that tendency, you will continually fall into it in your physical life, too. Whatever your new plans are, a new diet or a vow to keep the gas tank above a quarter tank, you are going to do very well on your new system for a few weeks and then you will slip up. No matter how diligent you think you are, one day in the dim gloom of a drizzly February day, you will look up in surprise to see that counter looking worse than it did when you started. It will hit you that you have failed and you will be tempted to look upon all the effort you put into it to change yourself and your life was a great big honking waste of time! My thinking usually sounds a bit like this, "Almighty Me has put for a bit of effort and now the job should run itself without anything more from Me. It isn't fair!" If that sounds in any way familiar or if that random Internet pic of a messy counter top is yours, swallow your pride, pray, repent, and get back to the job. That's just how that works.

#3 Be Smart and Be Lazy
Be lazy enough to understand that a little effort every day avoids the tremendous effort once a week/month/year. Putting off a job multiplies magnificently (horrifically?) the effort it takes to do the same job. You may think you are being lazy by ignoring a problem spot, but the really lazy person designs her life around the least effort humanly possible. If 10 minutes of cleanup twice a week is all that it takes to keep the counter top clear, but 5 seconds of putting away a piece of mail in the moment is all it takes, be lazy enough to pick the latter. That's just smart.

So, enjoy your New Year. Keep your Resolutions, but do so armed with the understanding that breaking an old habit of disorderliness with a new habit of orderliness is going to take time and a bit of human frailty. Always keep in mind that first thought, that God is a God of order. If you find your February beginning to bloom with the flowers of your old familiar chaos, remember that like cold is the absence of heat, chaos is the absence of God. Laxity in your physical world may be a sign of laxity in the spiritual, so begin weeding it out with prayer and repentance. That could never hurt.
