The Catholic Defender promotes a "Clean Heart"

It was December 1984 just after I signed up to join the Military I found myself debating fellow workers at the warehouse I worked.

They had a running debate that I would totally change and begin to cuss. They told me that bad language was so prevalent that I will simply fall in.

They thought that I would be able to cuss the wall paper off the wall.

Their taunting me in good sport had some real teeth, especially when you look at 1 Corinthians 15:33? It states, "Do not be led astray, 'Bad Company corrupts good morals".

That is an important issue to contend with if you are serious in practicing your faith. Words certainly have an effect, Jesus states, "For from the fullness of the heart the mouth speaks. A good person brings forth good out of a store of goodness, but an evil person brings forth evil out of a store of evil. I tell you, on the day of judgment people will render an account for every careless word they speak. By your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned" (Matthew 12:34-37).

I have long told people that we are known basically from three things about us:

1. We are known for the words we speak, the things we say.

2. We are know from the things we do, how we act in accordance to our word.

3. We are also known for the things we love.

If you have evil in your heart, it is difficult not to expose that eventually. God will not deceive us, nor can we deceive God. Sometimes we can fake it for awhile, the Lord has it 100% right, out of the heart the mouth speaks!

The effect foul language has I think cause the angels to depart your company. St. Paul writes, "Put to death, then the parts of you that are earthly: immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and the greed that is idolatry. Because of these the wrath of God is coming upon the disobedient. By these you too once conducted yourselves, when you lived in that way. But now you must put them all away: anger, fury, malice, slander, and obscene language out of your mouths" (Colossians 3:5-8).

St. Paul also wrote to the Ephesians saying, "No foul language should come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for needed edification, that it may impact grace to those who hear" (Ephesians 4:29).

It is clear that an unbridled tongue can be hazardous to your spiritual health. It is so sad to see many youth today imitating many of the Rap/rock artist who place foul language so prevalent in their music.

Matthew 18:6 Jesus warns, "Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a great millstone hung around his neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea". It is important that we lead by example, something many in the music buisness do not do.

Revelation 18 discusses the fall of Babylon, many believe this is a code name for Rome. It gives a litany of groups no longer to be found there beginning with verse 21 through 23.

It is interesting that the first on the list are the musicians and you have to go to the bottom of verse 23 to find out why. It says, "all nations were led astray by your sorcery" (magic portion). "Pharmacology" or the use of drugs can be seen here as well.

If you have allowed yourself to be so influenced by your environment that over time you "cuss the wall paper off the wall", here is a good tip for you.

Work on a month to month schedule where you can see improvement.

Don't get too harsh on yourself when you fail. But reward yourself when you can say that over the last 30 days you can see a marked difference.

Pray unceasingly asking God, "A clean heart create for me, God; renew in me a steadfast spirit" (Psalms 51:12). I play lots of Christian music, some very good Christian parody songs of popular music. For this next song, I just want to warn you, it's coming!!! (lol)
